Kyle Jordan (guitar), Scott Poll ( clarinet), Peter Turner (trombone), Keith Hartshorn-Walton (tuba)
The Capital City Stompers is an Ottawa-based traditional jazz quartet led by versatile guitarist Kyle Jordan. Initiated by Kyle in the months immediately prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the band’s monthly residency at Art House Cafe has become popular with a new generation of listeners. The band’s growing repertoire is inspired by early New Orleans jazz, where echoes of marching bands, ragtime and latin influences are never far from the surface.
Tuba virtuoso Keith Hartshorn-Walton brings a distinctive vintage sound to the band’s bottom end. While the group is unusual in that it has no trumpet; the seamless interplay between clarinetist Scott Poll and trombonist Peter Turner - cultivated over three decades - ensures a full melodic “front-line” sound. These features have made the Capital City Stompers a “gateway band” for many listeners discovering live jazz for the first time. The band is also popular with Ottawa’s vibrant swing dance community.
