Sometimes making good music is, in fact, Rocket Science, which is the name of Ottawa’s most eclectic and entertaining group of seasoned musical performers. The group is headed by singer/songwriter and guitarist, Amory LeClair, who brings poignant and often humorous insights into the human plight through his lyrics and choice of subjects.
If you ask him about his influences, Amory rattles off a quick list of rock classics from Hendrix to Pink Floyd and the Beatles, but if you ask him to pin a label on his own musical style, he goes silent. All he can say is what others have said, it’s a combination of suburban eclectic and world music — if your world is another planet.
Rocket Science was conceived after the pandemic prevented Amory from performing with his previous band, and on a hunch he invited classical oboist, JB Talmadge to join him as a musical duo. By this time JB had eschewed his “ill wind” for an EWI (electronic wind instrument) which can produce an expanded range of sounds from horns to violins, synths and primitive flutes.
Later, when the world was stepping out again, Nick Chapchal, lead guitarist from the surf band, Snub Fighters, joined the duo playing bass and vocals. Recently the group’s sound has filled out with percussionist Peter Pelletier, who also performs with other local ensembles.
Amory LeClair has produced seven alternative musical CDs with Happenstance the Camel. He’s self-taught and has written over 100 songs in his musical career.
JB Talmadge is an internationally acclaimed visual artist and musician originally from Los Angeles where he once played oboe for the LA Symphony under the direction of conductor Leon Thomas.
